Bicycle jam is an unusual concept if you are coming from a latin country. Here in Groningen things are quite different. Groningen is one of the best cities in the world to own and ride a bicycle; remarkably, 57% of all transportation within the city is done by bike.
Located in the north of Netherlands, 2 hours away from Amsterdam by intercity train, it is a peaceful place to live, with good amenities, pleasant people, and clean air.
I’m visiting this city; and I’m writing this post while outside Winter is no longer coming; it’s everywhere. Although it rains a lot, it’s not intense, and frequently stops for periods of 15 mins, which gives those who ride the time to go between places.
These days the sunrise is at 8.15 am and the sunset takes place before 4.30 pm, which gives to the sun only a few hours to show his gracefulness. The daylight will decrease in the next weeks, but don’t let your self be fooled by the darkness falling over the city: it’s a vibrant cultural center! Working days finish at 5 pm and they dine around 6 pm. Afterwards the inhabitants choose to enjoy a late night session at their favorite bars. Surprisingly, it’s the dutch city with more bars and coffees per person, offering as well high quality restaurants with gastronomies from all over the world.
The city policy is to promote live performances; bars are granted the possibility of staying open till 6 am if they allow artists to play; if not, they will have to close at 2 am! For this reason Groningen is one of the most active cities in the world regarding music!
But not only! Groningen is also a city of art. There are frequent expositions at the museums of local artists. In fact, before the second world war, Groningen was a city with a strong Jewish community, living of trade and business, with powerful families having extensive collections. Funnily enough, Groningen is mocked to be the “trash collectors” of the Netherlands, as it actively seeks and trades art in its many forms. It has around 200.000 inhabitants, and a quarter of them are students, being the youngest city of Netherlands. Why do students from all over the world flock into this city? Because it has one of the best universities in the world (ranked 74th, according to The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-2016).

Trânsito de bicicletas é um conceito incomum nos países latinos. Aqui, em Groningen, as coisas são bem diferentes. Groningen é uma das melhores cidades do mundo para andar de bicicleta; notavelmente, 57% de todo o transporte na cidade é feito de bicicleta.
Localizada no norte dos Países Baixos, encontra-se a 2 horas e pouco, de comboio intercidades, desde Amsterdão. É um lugar tranquilo para viver, com boas infra-estruturas, óptimos serviços, pessoas agradáveis ​​e um ar limpíssimo.
Estou a visitar esta cidade e enquanto escrevo este post, lá fora o inverno não dá tréguas. Embora chova muito, a chuva não é intensa e pára com frequência por períodos médios de 15 minutos, o que facilita o uso da bicicleta.
Nestes dias, o nascer do sol acontece por volta das 8:15 horas e o pôr do sol ocorre antes de 16:30, o que dá ao sol apenas algumas horas para mostrar a sua graciosidade. A luz do dia vai diminuir nas próximas semanas, mas não  se deixe enganar pela escuridão que cai sobre a cidade: esta é um centro cultural vibrante!
O horário laboral termina às 17:00 e o jantar é servido por volta das 18:00. Depois, os habitantes podem relaxar em um dos seus bares favoritos. Surpreendentemente, é a cidade holandesa com mais bares e cafés por pessoa, oferecendo restaurantes de alta qualidade e gastronomias de todo o mundo.
A política da cidade visa promover espectáculos ao vivo;  os bares têm a possibilidade de permanecerem abertos até às 6 horas da manhã se possuirem performances musicais ao vivo; caso contrário, o estabelecimento tem de fechar às duas horas da manhã! Por esta razão, Groningen é uma das cidades mais ativas do mundo, no que concerne à música! Mas não só! Groningen é também uma cidade de arte. Há exposições frequentes de artistas locais. Na verdade, antes da segunda guerra mundial, Groningen era uma cidade com uma forte comunidade judaica, que vivia do comércio e dos negócios, com famílias poderosas com extensas coleções artísticas.
Tem cerca de 200.000 habitantes, e um quarto deles são estudantes, sendo a cidade mais jovem da Holanda. A cidade tem uma buliçosa reputação, pois é casa de  uma das melhores universidades do mundo (localizada na posição 74, de acordo com o The Times Higher Education Mundial University Rankings 2015-2016).
