ROTTERDAM – MUST SEES – IN ONE DAY TRIP

You’re travelling to the Netherlands and you want to see something else than the typical Dutch city. Or you fancy modern architecture; Rotterdam is the city to visit in these cases.
Railway connections in The Netherlands are very well established, and my advice is for you to take advantage of them. Wake up early and cycle to the train station; once there, buy the ticket. (Note: If you have a maestro card you can buy the ticket on the self-service machines; with a Visa you will need to buy it from the desk office and pay more 0.50€ for each trip. You can also buy it online here. In the Netherlands most of the place doesn’t accept VISA Cards and some of them only accept payments by card. Ah! Don’t forget to validate the ticket-card before entering the train.

1- CENTRAL STATION

Designed by Team CS (a collaboration between Benthem Crouwel Architects, MVSA Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten and West 8), the Rotterdam Central Station is part of the European network of high-speed railway lines and a nodal point in the city itself; it is one of the most important transport hubs in The Netherlands with 110,000 passengers a day, having as many travelers as Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Rotterdam Centraal is the first stop in the Netherlands when travelling from the south and is strategically positioned in the middle of Europe, with Schiphol only twenty minutes away, and Paris a mere two and a half hours. Hence the new station is not only larger, brighter and more ordered than the former, but also has an international feel; it beautifully complements both the efficiency of the High-speed stop and the Rotterdam city’s bold ambitions for urban development and renewal.

2- STADHUIS

The Town Hall, “Stadhuis”, is located on a building designed by Henri Evers, dating from the years 1914-1920.

3- ST. LAURENCE CHURCH

This late gothic church (1449-1525) is the only building remaining from the medieval period of the city.

During the bomb of Rotterdam, on 14 May 1940, the church was almost totally destroyed and the tower was badly damaged. The tower was restored from 1947 to 1962 and the church from 1952 to 1968.

4-MARKTHAL

An active market hall bursting with fresh fish, dry food, exotic spices, bread straight out from the oven, tender meat, innumerable cheeses and vegetables from local suppliers. A great market to make your grocery shopping, and where you can really settle for a drink or a snack. Stop here for a minute and have lunch.

The building is the work of MVRDV, the leading wave of “Superdutch” architects that emerged in the Netherlands in the 1990s, spawned from the Rem Koolhaas’s Office of Metropolitan Architecture (note: Rem Koolhaas was the arquitect of “Casa da Música”, in Porto, Portugal). Always accompanied by polemic, their projects are characterized by striking structural feats.

5- CUBE-HOUSE

The cube-house (or pole-house or tree-house) is a design of the Dutch architect Piet Blom. He thought of his house design as a tree and of the total complex as a forest (village) within the city. For Blom it was an experiment, with the house being tilted 45 deg with the shape of a cube, distancing from any conventional house concept. This tilted cube rests upon a hexagon-shaped pylon (you can now imagine the tree.) For further informations visit: http://www.kubuswoning.nl/introkubuseng.html.

You can visit the show-cube from 11am to 5pm, for 2.50 € per person. The show-cube is a fully furnished museumhouse.

6- WILLEMSBRUG

The Willems bridge, Willemsbrug, is the “golden gate bridge” of Rotterdam. It was built in 1981.

7- Erasmusbrug

Erasmusbrug is a singular bridge between the centre of Rotterdam and the area of the Kop van Zuid.

8- MUSEUM (for example: boijmans van beuningen)

If you have time (I didn’t; which was a pity! 😦 ) visit one museum. Check the web page of this museum for more info.

9- EUROMAST

Last but not least, if you want to see Rotterdam on the heights, or even sleep or eat with Rotterdam on your feet, go to the Euromast. I decided not to go because the day was too cloudy and rainy to enjoy the view from a high point.

Se se encontra na Holanda e quer ver algo mais do que a típica cidade holandesa. Ou se gosta de arquitetura moderna; Rotterdam é a cidade que deve visitar.
As ligações ferroviárias nos Países Baixos são óptimas, e o meu conselho é que as aproveite. Acorde cedo e dirija-se para a estação de comboios; uma vez lá, compre o bilhete. (Nota: Se possuir um cartão bancário maestro pode comprar o seu bilhete nas máquinas; se só possuir VISA terá que comprar na bilheteira e pagar mais 0,50 € por cada viagem ou também pode comprá-lo online. Na Holanda, a maior parte dos estabelecimentos não aceita cartões VISA e muitos locais só aceitam pagamentos por cartão). Ah! Não se esqueça de validar o bilhete antes de entrar/e depois de sair do comboio. Uma coisa óptima nestes transportes é que se lhe apetecer sair a meio da viagem, pode sair e voltar a entrar, no mesmo dia, não necessitando de adquirir mais nenhum bilhete, o objectivo é que chegue à estação final.
Uma vez em Roterdão, proponho que visite os seguintes locais:

1- ESTAÇÃO CENTRAL

Projetada pelo grupo CS (uma colaboração entre Benthem Crouwel Architects, MVSA Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten e Weste 8) faz parte da rede europeia de linhas ferroviárias de alta velocidade e é um ponto nodal na própria cidade; é um dos centros de transportes mais importantes na Holanda com 110.000 passageiros por dia, tendo tantos viajantes como o Aeroporto Schiphol de Amesterdão. A estação central é a sua primeira paragem nos Países Baixos quando viaja de sul e está estrategicamente posicionada no meio da Europa, com Schiphol apenas a vinte minutos de distância, e Paris a apenas duas horas e meia. Esta nova estação é maior, mais brilhante e mais ordenada do que a anterior, mas também mais internacional.

2- STADHUIS

Câmara Municipal, Stadhuis, está localizada num prédio projetado por Henri Evers, e data dos anos 1914-1920.

3- IGREJA S. LAURENCE

Esta igreja de gótico tardio (1449-1525) é o único edifício restante do período medieval da cidade.
Durante o bombardeamento de Roterdão, em 14 de maio de 1940, a igreja foi quase totalmente destruída e a torre foi seriamente danificada. A torre foi restaurada entre 1947-1962 e a igreja nos anos 1952 a 1968.

4- MARKTHAL

É um mercado ativo onde pode encontrar peixe fresco, frutos secos, especiarias exóticas, pão quente, carne deliciosa, inumeros queijos e produtos hortícolas provenientes de fornecedores locais. Um grande mercado onde pode fazer as suas compras de supermercado, e onde pode degustar uma refeição, num dos restaurante inseridos no mercado. Pare aqui e almoce.
O edifício é o resultado de um trabalho de MVRDV, um dos “super-arquitetos” da Holanda que surgiu na década de 1990, a partir do escritório do Rem Koolhaas (nota: Rem Koolhaas é o arquitecto que projetou a “Casa da Música”, no Porto).

5- CUBE-HOUSE

A casa-cubo (ou casa-poste ou casa-árvore) é um projeto do arquiteto holandês Piet Blom. Neste projeto, a casa é vista como uma árvore e o complexo total como uma floresta (aldeia) dentro da cidade. Para Blom foi uma experiência, colocando a casa a 45º graus e com a forma de um cubo, distanciando-se do conceito convencional de uma casa. Pode visitar uma casa-cubo, das 11h às 17h, por 2,50 € por pessoa. Esta casa-cubo é um museu e encontra-se totalmente mobilada.

6- WILLEMSBRUG

A ponte Willems, Willemsbrug, é a “ponte portão dourado” de Roterdão. Foi construída em 1981.

7- ERASMUSBRUG

Erasmusbrug é uma ponte singular que liga o centro de Roterdão e a região do Kop van Zuid.

8- MUSEU (por exemplo: Boijmans Van Beuningen)

Se você tiver tempo (eu não fiz. Foi uma pena! :() visite um museu. Verifique o site deste museu para mais informações.

9- EUROMAST

Por último mas não menos importante, se quiser ver Roterdão nas alturas, ou mesmo dormir e/ou comer com Roterdão a seus pés, tudo isso é possível no Euromast. Eu decidi não subir, porque o dia estava bastante encoberto e chuvoso.
