THE HAGUE – HALF A DAY TRIP

Last November, during our stay in Groningen, we took the opportunity to explore other cities in The Netherlands.
We had already visited Rotterdam and Gouda, so this time we decided to take a chance in Den Hague (The Hague).
The Hague, located in the western coast of The Netherlands, is the 3rd largest city in the Netherlands, and is where the dutch government administratives houses, parliament, queen’s palace and others are seatled.
Discovering Den Hague was a thrilling experience for me. The modernity and the design of the new buildings integrated with old majestic structures make the city perfect.I could see my self perfectly living there, don’t ask me why. 🙂 It is not as touristic as Amsterdam; not as picturesque and small as Gouda or Delft…; and without the overwhelming buildings of Rotterdam; but something there makes it wildly appealing!
Since we had a limited amount of time to visit the city, we had to choose carefully. So here are my top, for a half a day in this beautiful city.

1- PLEIN

If you arrive at the central station go directly to southwest, to Plein, which means square. It is the most emblematic square of the city, full of bars, restaurants and historic buildings. This is where demonstrations against government policies occur (we even saw one).
In your way to Plein, you will see traditional houses and contemporany design structures.

2- MAURITSHUIS

Head to Mauritshuis, the royal picture gallery located in a 17th century-palace overlooking the water, and house of dutch masterpieces such as ” The Girl with a Pearl Earring” from Johannes Vermeer.
It is a small gallery that you can visit it in no more than one hour.

Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 11am-5pm. Monday 10am-5pm only from Apr-Aug.
Price: 11,50€ (below 18 years old have free entrance).

3- BINNENHOF

Next to Mauritshuis, you will see a set of houses named Binnenhof or in other words inner court – the seat of the government of the country of Holland, the dutch republic and the kingdom of The Netherlands.

4- DE PASSAGE

It is time for shopping!
Close by you will find De Passage, the only remaining example in The Netherlands of a cover street shopping.
If you are hungry there are some restaurants around (we went to Milù and it was very comfy).

5- NOORDEINDE PALACE

Finish the visit passing by the Noordeinde Palace. Don’t forget to take some pictures.
Noordeinde Palace is one of the three official palaces of the dutch royal family.

A HAIA – VIAGEM DE MEIO-DIA

No passado Novembro, durante a nossa estadia em Groninga, aproveitamos a oportunidade para explorar algumas cidades dos Países Baixos durante os fins de semana. Já tínhamos visitado Roterdão e Gouda, e desta vez elegemos Den Hague (A Haia).
A Haia, localizada na costa oeste dos Países Baixos, é a 3ª cidade maior dos Países Baixos e é lá que o governo holandês, o parlamento, bem como os palácios reais estão localizados.
Visitar Den Hague foi uma experiência excitante. A modernidade e o design de novas construções integrados de forma excecional com majestosas estruturas antigas fazem uma cidade perfeita.
Conseguia-me ver a viver lá. 🙂 Não é turística como Amsterdão; não é pequena e pitoresca como Gouda ou Delft…; e nem é inundada por prédios como Roterdão.
Uma vez que o tempo disponível para visitar a cidade era reduzido, tentamos escolher o melhor do melhor e aqui segue o meu top 5 do que fazer em A Haia num meio-dia.

1- PLEIN

Se chegou na estação central, siga directo para sudoeste em direção a Plein, a praça.

Esta praça é a mais emblemática da cidade. É rodeada por cafés, restaurantes e edifícios históricos. E é aqui que as manifestações contra o governo ocorrem (nós vimos uma).

Pelo caminho até Plein irá encontrar casas tradicionais e estruturas contemporâneas.

2- MAURITSHUIS

Siga para Mauritshuis, o museu de pintura localizado num palácio do século XVII sobre a água, e que é a casa de ilustres peças holandesas como “A rapariga com o brinco de pérola” de Johannes Vermeer.
É uma galeria pequena e em pouco mais de uma hora consegue percorre-la toda.

Horas: Terça – Sábado 10.00-17.00 e Domingo 11.00-17.00. Segunda 10.00-17.00 só de Abril a Agosto.
Preço: 11,50€ (menores de 18 anos têm entrada grátis).

3- BINNENHOF

Ao lado do Mauritshuis encontrará um conjunto de casas cujo nome é Binnenhof e que alberga a sede do estado da Holanda, o ministério dos assuntos gerais e o escritório do Primeiro Ministro dos Países Baixos.

4- DE PASSAGE

Compraaass!

Muito perto irá encontrar o De Passage, o único exemplo nos Países Baixos de uma rua de compras coberta.

Caso esteja com fome, aproveite um dos restaurantes que existe nessa zona (nós fomos ao Milù, um restaurante bastante aconchegado para dias frios e com gente bonita. :))
