Aachen is located in the norwest of Germany at the border with Netherlands and Belgium. Also known as Aix-de-la-chapelle or Aquisgrano, its name derives from the latin word for water. Historically, this place is known as a spa city and a favourite residence of the King Charlemagne.
After living a month in Aachen, I feel that I can share a brief description of the things you can do during your stay. Stay tuned! 🙂
Aachen está situada no lado noroeste da Alemanha, fazendo fronteira com a Holanda e Bélgica. Também conhecida como Aix-de-la-chapelle ou mesmo Aquisgrana, o seu nome deriva do latim e significa água. Historicamente, este lugar é conhecido como uma cidade termal e a residência predilecta do Rei Carlos Magno.
Depois de viver um mês em Aachen, tenho a liberdade de poder compartilhar uma breve descrição das coisas que pode e deve fazer durante a sua estadia lá. Atente! 🙂
1- WEIHNACHTSMARKT
Make your trip during Christimas season and you be able to see the big, charming, and enchanted, Aachen Weihnachtsmarkt – Christmas Market. Take this opportunity to eat a typical german sausage (wurst) and drink a mulled wine (Glühwein).
Faça a sua viagem durante a temporada natalícia e poderá ver o grande e encantado Weihnachtsmarkt – Mercado de Natal de Aquisgrana. Aproveite esta oportunidade para comer uma salsicha típica alemã (wurst) e beber um vinho quente (Glühwein).
2- AACHENER DOM
Aachen Cathedral is a roman catholic church more than 1200 years old. It is the oldest cathedral in northern Europe. It was built by order of the Emperor Charlemagne and was the church of coronation of many German kings.
It will take your breath just looking to its grandiose architecture.
A Catedral de Aquisgrana é uma igreja católica romana com mais de 1200 anos. É a catedral mais velha na Europa do norte. Construída por ordem do imperador Carlos Magno, foi a igreja de coroação de muitos reis alemães.
Tirará o seu folgo apenas olhando para a oponente arquitectura.
Hours: Everyday. From 7am to 6am (January – March) and till 7pm in April-December.

3- CAROLUS THERMEN BAD AACHEN
Reserve 2 to 3 hours to relax and recover in this recognized spa.
The prices depend on the duration of your stay, the day of the week, and if you use the sauna (reminder: german sauna!). The basic entrance includes an indoor space that is composed by a pool, a steam bath, jacuzzis and rest rooms. They have three outdoor spaces: the “sun pool”, the “rocky pool” and a terrace for sunny days.
The “rocky pool”, for me, was my favourite. You can just relax and recieve jets of water. And from time to time, they will drive a water current around the pool that lasts for 5 minutes. You can let your self be carried by the quick flowing current and enjoy the ride! After a time gap, some water will start to fall from the huge rock, just like a waterfall. Reserve 2 a 3 horas para relaxar e recuperar neste reconhecido spa.
Os preços dependem da duração, do dia da semana, e se usa a sauna (lembrete: sauna alemã!). A entrada básica inclui um espaço interior que é composto por uma piscina, banho turco, jacuzzis e salas de repouso. Existem três espaços ao ar livre: a “piscina solar”, a “piscina rochosa” e um terraço para dias ensolarados.
A “piscina rochosa”, para mim, foi a minha predilecta. Em que pode apenas relaxar e receber jactos de água. E de quando em vez, aparecerá uma corrente de água ao redor da piscina que dura cerca de 5 minutos. Pode deixar-se levar pela rápida corrente e apreciar o passeio! Depois de um intervalo de tempo, alguma água começará a cair da enorme rocha existente na piscina, tal como uma cascata.

4- PRINTEN
The visit to Aachen will never be complete without trying the traditional Christmas cookie: Printen. Similar to gingerbread, but with a define presence of aniseed, it is a German sweet seen in all pastries of Aachen. The traditional one is made from cinnamon, aniseed, clove, cardamom, coriander, allspice and ginger. But you can also find Printen with nuts (usually almonds), covered in chocolate or glaze and marzipan.
They were initially designed for travellers that went of Santiago’s route to Santiago de Compostela, and therefore they are dry, and free of eggs and milk to prevent rotting.
A visita a Aquisgrana nunca estará completa sem experimentar o tradicional biscoito de Natal: Printen. Semelhante aos doces de gengibre, mas com uma presença marcante de anis, é um doce alemão visto em todas as pastelarias da cidade. O tradicional é feito com canela, anis, cravo, cardamomo, coentro, pimenta e gengibre. Mas há variações, desde um Printen com amêndoas, passando por um de chocolate até ao Printen de maçapão.
Foram inicialmente projectados para os viajantes que seguiam a rota de Santiago para Santiago de Compostela, e, por esse motivo, eles são secos, e livre de ovos e leite para prolongar a sua duração.
5- ELISENBRUNNEN
Elisa Fountain (Elisenbrunnen in german), located in the Elisengarten a neoclassical structure built in 1822. The central pavilion contains two fountains with thermal water that is reputed to help cure diseases in those who drink it. If you are brave enough, take a gulp of the sulfurous warm water.
A fonte Elisa (Elisenbrunnen em alemão), situada no Elisengarten, é uma estrutura neoclássica construída em 1822. O pavilhão central contém duas fontes com água termal e quem beber será curado das suas doenças. Se for corajoso o suficiente, tome um gole desta água quente sulfurosa.
6- RATHAUS
It is the town hall of the city. It is an impressive gothic building, located in the heart of the historic center – Market Square.
É a câmara da cidade. É um impressionante edifício gótico, localizado no coração do centro histórico – na Praça do Mercado.
7- AACHEN FOUNTAINS
All around the city you can find many fountains, and each one as a particular meaning. Some examples: The “Dolls’ Fountain” (Puppenbrunnen) is composed by movable bronze marionettes and each one symbolizes something (i.e. the professor and the harlequin represent doctrine and culture; a cock reminds us of the french occupation of the past, etc.).
The fountain “Circulation of Money”, situated in the historic center near Elisengarten, presents six bronze figures: the woman symbolizes thrift, the leaning man avarice, and the father with his child means learning to deal with money. The centrifugal movement of water exemplifies how money connects all.
Ao redor da cidade irá encontrar inúmeras fontes e cada um com um significado particular. Alguns exemplos:
A “fonte das bonecas” (Puppenbrunnen) é composta por marionetas de bronze móveis e cada uma simboliza algo (ou seja, um professor e um harlequin significa a doutrina e a cultura; um galo lembra-nos da ocupação francesa no passado, etc).
A fonte “Circulação do Dinheiro”, situada no centro histórico perto de Elisengarten, apresenta seis figuras de bronze: uma mulher que simboliza a parcimônia, o homem inclinado denota a avareza, um pai explica ao filho como se lida com o dinheiro e o movimento centrífugo da água exemplifica o fluxo constante do dinheiro.
8- CENTRE CHARLEMAGNE. LUDWIG FORUM
Reserve a day to go to some museums. My choices go the “Centre Charlemagne”, to learn more about Aachen history; and to the “Ludwig Forum”, to see some modern art.
Reservar um dia para ir a alguns museus. As minhas escolhas recaem para o “Centro Carlos Magno” para aprender mais sobre a história de Aachen; e para o “Fórum Ludwig” para ver alguma arte moderna.
9- GUIDE TOUR
If you want to learn and understand more about Aachen, don’t miss the guided tour. The tourism of Aachen offers english and german tours on saturday, for a small fee. I definitely recommend!
Se quiser aprender e entender mais sobre Aachen não perca um passeio com um guia turístico. O turismo de Aquisgrana oferece excursões em inglês e alemão no sábado, por uma pequena taxa. Eu, definitivamente, recomendo!
10- LINDT OUTLET
Yeah, you read right! 🙂 Aachen houses a Lindt chocolate industry and with that an outlet shop. Go and grab some chocolates to carry home.
Sim, leu bem! 🙂 A cidade de Aquisgrana alberga uma fábrica de chocolates Lindt e uma loja outlet com promoções irresistíveis. Vá e compre alguns chocolates para levar para casa.
11- MONSCHAU
Monschau is a small picturesque town in the Eifel region of western Germany, located 30km from Aachen. If you have time, take a half-day trip to there and explore the Eifel region.
Monschau é uma pequena cidade pitoresca na região de Eifel na Alemanha Ocidental, localizada a 30 km de Aachen. Se tiver tempo, reserve uma tarde para a visitar e explorar a região Eifel.
12- MAASTRICH
Last but not least… Located a less then 40km from Aachen, Maastrich calls your attention to its cozy restaurantes and coffes, dynamic atmosphere and shopping malls. It is always nice to have a whiff of other culture, if you have the time.
Por último, mas não menos importante… Localizada a menos de 40 km de Aachen, Maastrich chama a atenção pelos seus restaurantes e cafés acolhedores, a sua atmosfera dinâmica e os seus shoppings. É sempre bom ter uma lufada de outra cultura, caso tenha tempo.
