Jeju is the largest island of South Korea and it’s located on the south of the Korean Peninsula. It is part of The New 7 Wonders of Nature. The island is heaven for those who want to get away from the crazy city life of Seoul and are looking for some clean, fresh air to breath.

The island is famous for its Dol Hareubang, the large statues found around the island. These statues are considered to be gods, which provide protection and fertility to the areas where they are placed. For this reason they were located just outside of the village gates to protect people from demons. The original statues account only to a total of 46. Nowadays they became Jeju touristic symbol, and copies can be found everywhere.

A Ilha de Jeju é a maior ilha da Coréia do Sul e está localizada no sul da península coreana. É parte das Novas 7 Maravilhas da Natureza. A ilha é um paraíso para aqueles que se querem afastar da vida agitada da cidade e respirar um pouco de ar limpo. 🙂 

A ilha é famosa pelos Dol Hareubang, grandes estátuas que se encontram por toda a ilha. Estas rochas são como deuses a oferecer proteção e fertilidade, e são colocadas fora dos portões das aldeias para proteger as pessoas dos demónios. As originais somam um total de 46.
Hoje em dia são o símbolo da ilha Jeju e é possível encontrar cópias em todo o lado.

Jeju is also known for its green tea, commonly used in many products, such as tea, ice-creams, cakes (O’sulloc brand), and korean cosmetics (like Innisfreee). But let’s not forget the sweet mandarines from Jeju.

In the past, when international flights were not affordable to Koreans, Jeju was the regular destination for honeymooners. Nowadays, its sought mainly by Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and  Singaporeans tourists.

A ilha também é conhecida pelo seu chá verde, o qual é utilizado em chás, gelados, bolos (uma das marcas mais conhecidas é a O’sulloc) e em cosméticos coreanos (Innisfreee). Sem esquecermo-nos das doces tangerinas de Jeju.

Antigamente, quando viajar não era acessível, Jeju era o destino efeito para a lua-de-mel dos Coreanos. Hoje abriga sobretudo turístas Coreanos, Chineses, Japoneses e Singapurenses.

⇒When to go?
I visited Jeju last week and I have to say that I wasn’t expecting an island with so much natural charm. It was a treat for the eyes. Beautiful, even in the cold month of December. Still, if you are able to visit the island during summer, you will be able to get build some tan at its beautiful beaches.  Spring and autumn, with the abundance of flowers, colors, and mild weather must be extremely  pleasant.

⇒Quando visitar?
Eu visitei Jeju na semana passada e confesso que não estava à espera de tamanha beleza natural. É deveras impressionante, mesmo no frio mês de Dezembro.
Se tem oportunidade de visitar a ilha no Verão vá e aproveite as suas praias. A Primavera e o Outono, com as suas cores, flores e a sua temperatura amena são, igualmente, boas alturas para visitar a ilha.

⇒How many days?
Jeju is a large island. With 1,848 km² it is impossible to see everything in one day.  I recommend a minimum of 3-4 days.

Jeju é uma grande ilha com 1848 km². É  impossível visitar todas as atrações em apenas um dia. Recomendo no mínimo 3 a 4 dias.

⇒How can you reach Jeju?
From Seoul, South Korea, you can catch a low cost flight with Jeju Air,  Jin Air, and Eastar Jet;  a non-low-cost flight but with cheap fares like Asiana; or a more expensive flight with Korean Air. There are flights every day and more than one per day. I flew with Asiana and I spent 50€ for a two-way trip.

⇒Como chegar?
Desde Seul, Coreia do Sul, existem companhias low cost como a Jeju Air,  Jin Air, Eastar Jet;  companhias com voos económicos como a Asiana; e ainda a companhia Korean Air com voos mais dispendiosos. Há vários voos diários. Eu viajei com a Asiana e gastei cerca de 50€ num bilhete de ida e volta.

⇒Where to stay?
If you have limited time, and it’s off-season, stay at an hotel close to the airport. One option could be Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel. It stays at 8 min from the airport by car/taxi,  and it is a 5-star hotel. The workers are very friendly, the rooms are clean and spacious, and the breakfast (taking into account that Koreans don’t eat western breakfast) isn’t all that bad. Otherwise, if you are OK with time, choose Seogwipo, in the South of the island, where you can find all the nice beaches and quality resorts.

⇒Onde ficar?
Se está limitado em tempo e se é época baixa fique perto do aeroporto de Jeju, na cidade de Jeju. Uma boa opção é o Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel. Esta grande acomodação, localizada a 8 minutos de carro do aeroporto, é um hotel de 5 estrelas. Os empregados são atenciosos, os quartos são limpos e espaçosos, e o pequeno-almoço (tendo em conta que os Coreanos não comem um pequeno-almoço ocidental) é óptimo.
Caso contrário, fique em Seogwipo, no sul na ilha, onde existem boas praias e resorts de qualidade.

⇒How to move?
It is quite complicated to get around in the island. If you are staying in Jeju City and want to explore the south/southwest, the best way is to catch the Bus 600 at the airport to Seogwipo. The bus takes around 1 hour and costs 4.500krw (~3.50€).  Once there, you can explore close by landmarks and other places by taxi.  Information desks are readily available in many places, and they can help you with calling for a taxi. Make sure to negotiate the price you are willing to pay to the taxi. Another option would be to join a bus tour.
For site seeing the east side I joined this tour. They picked me up and dropped me off very conveniently at the hotel.

⇒Como se mover?
Poderá ser um pouco complicado mover-se na ilha. Se se encontra hospedado na cidade de Jeju e quer explorar a parte sul/sudoeste a melhor opção é apanhar o autocarro 600 no aeroporto para Seogwipo. A viagem demora 1 hora e custa 4.500krw (~3.50€), uma vez lá vá de táxi aos locais turísticos que pretende visitar.
Outra opção será juntar-se a uma excursão de autocarro. Para visitar o lado este da ilha optei por esta excursão. 

⇒What to eat?
Jeju is great for its fresh and raw fish, abalone, black pork, green tea, mandarines, and peanuts – cultivated in a small island called Udo, 20 minutes away by ferryboat.

⇒O que comer?
A ilha de Jeju é boa para degustar peixe fresco e cru, abalone, porco preto, chá verde, tangerinas e amendoins – cultivados numa pequena ilha, Udo, localizada a 20min de ferry de Jeju.
