My husband and I traveled to Oxford, UK, in the fall of 2018 to visit a dear friend and her family. We arrived on a Saturday around noon and we came back on the next Monday morning.
Oxford is an enchanting British city with centuries of history. It has an outstanding architecture and its university has a big list of famous and highly revered alumni. Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll (“Alice in Wonderland”) and J. R. R. Tolkien (“The Lord of the Rings”) studied there. But the University of Oxford needs no presentation on its many achievements and the merits of those who studied there.

Eu e o meu marido viajamos para Oxford, no Reino Unido, no Outono do ano passado, para visitar uma querida amiga e a sua família. Chegamos num sábado à hora do almoço, e voltamos na segunda de manhã.
Oxford é uma cidade britânica encantadora, com séculos de história. Conta com uma arquitetura excepcional e a sua universidade possui uma grande lista de alumni famosos. Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll (“Alice no País das Maravilhas”) e J. R. R. Tolkien (“O Senhor dos Anéis”) estudaram aqui. Mas a Universidade de Oxford não precisa de qualquer apresentação.

HOW TO REACH?

We arrived at the Stansted airport in London by Ryanair. Once there, we caught a train to Liverpool station in London, like we did in our 1st trip to the British capital. But, we decided for a cheaper and a more convenient way by catching the Nation Express coach to Paddigton railway station. I bought the tickets in advance, and the roundtrip cost me around £10 per person.
At Paddigton railway station we caught a 45min~1h train to Oxford station. I bought the tickets, in advance, at the GreatWestern Railway’s website. The roundtrip, in standard class, cost me around £15 per person.

COMO CHEGAR?

Chegamos ao aeroporto Londres Stansted pela Ryanair. Uma vez lá, em vez de apanharmos o comboio para a estação de Liverpool em Londres, como fizemos na nossa primeira viagem a Londres, optámos por uma maneira mais barata e conveniente. Apanhamos um autocarro da Nation Express para a estação ferroviária de Paddigton. Comprei os bilhetes, com antecedência, e custaram-me à volta de £10 por pessoa, ida e volta.
Na estação ferroviária de Paddigton, apanhamos um comboio, com uma duração aproximada de 45min ~ 1h, até a estação de comboios de Oxford. Adquiri os bilhetes, com antecedência, no site GreatWestern Railway website. O preço, ida e volta, rondou £15 por pessoa, em classe económica.

CHRIST CHURCH

Christ Church is one of the most popular colleges in Oxford. It was one of the many Harry Potter’s filming locations, and the college’s dining hall also served as inspiration for the Great Hall of Hogwarts. 🙂
The entrance costs between £8-10 depending on the time of the year you decide to visit. Tickets include access to the cloisters, the grand staircase, the dining hall, and the cathedral. You can buy it here.

CHRIST CHURCH

Christ Church é uma das faculdades mais populares de Oxford. Foi um dos locais de filmagem do Harry Potter. E o refeitório da faculdade também serviu de inspiração para o Grande Salão de Hogwarts. 🙂

TRINITY COLLEGE

Fortunately we visited Oxford during the beginning of autumn, and the city and their colleges were sparkling with all the golden and red leafs, giving it a unique aura. The Trinity College, with its beautiful autumn gardens in contrast with its 1555 architecture, was simply splendorous.
In the past, the Trinity College was founded by a Pope and was home of Benedictine monks.

FACULDADE TRINITY

Felizmente, visitamos Oxford durante o começo do outono, e a cidade e as suas faculdades reluziam a folhagem dourada e encarnada. A Faculdade Trinity com os seus belos jardins outonais, em contraste com a sua arquitetura dos anos 1555, estava esplendorosa.
A Faculdade Trinity foi fundada por um papa e foi lar de monges beneditinos.

OLD BODLEIAN LIBRARY & DIVINITY SCHOOL

The Bodleian library, Duke Humfrey’s medieval library, is one of the oldest libraries in Europe. It dates from 1602 and it is Hogwarts’ library 🙂
Downstairs you have the Divinity School, where lectures and oral exams take place. Once again, it was used in Harry Potter movies as an infirmary.
To visit it, you have to join a daily guide tour. You can purchase the ticket here. You can opt for one of three tours lasting 30, 60, or 90 minutes respectively. On the 60 minutes tour, you get to see two more wonderful historical rooms than in the 30 minutes option, namely the Convocation House (formerly a meeting chamber for the House of Commons during the English Civil War) and the Chancellor’s Court. Additionally, in the 90 minutes tour, you will be able to see the Radcliffe Camera.
Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take pictures inside the Bodleian library.

ANTIGA BIBLIOTECA BODLEIAN & ESCOLA DIVINITY

A biblioteca Bodleian, a biblioteca medieval de Duke Humfrey, é uma das bibliotecas mais antigas da Europa. Data de 1602 e é a biblioteca de Hogwarts 🙂
No andar de baixo localiza-se a Escola Divinity, onde ocorrem palestras e exames orais. Mais uma vez, foi usada nos filmes de Harry Potter como uma enfermaria.
Para ver, precisa de participar num excursão diária, e o bilhete pode ser comprado aqui. Pode optar por uma visita de 30 minutos, uma visita de 60 minutos ou uma de 90 minutos. Na segunda, verá mais duas maravilhosas salas históricas, como a Casa de Convocação (que anteriormente era uma câmara de reunião para a Câmara dos Comuns durante a Guerra Civil Inglesa) e o Tribunal do Chanceler. E nos 90 minutos de excursão poderá ver a Câmera Radcliffe.
Infelizmente, na biblioteca Bodleian não é possível tirar fotos.

RADCLIFFE CAMERA

Radcliffe Camera is a circular library with a neoclassical dome. It is a iconic sight in Oxford.
The only way to enter is joining the guide tour that I talked above.

MAGDALEN COLLEGE

Founded in 1458, it is one of the biggest colleges in Oxford. The grounds are enormous and beautiful. It includes a deer park and a small river.

BRIDGE OF SIGHS

It is a bridge that joins two parts of the Hertford College and is worth seeing it. Its name comes from its similarity with Venice’s Bridge of Sighs.

É uma ponte que une duas partes da Faculdade Hertford e vale a pena vê-la. O seu nome deriva da sua semelhança com a Ponte dos Suspiros de Veneza.
