Carina Travel And Food

After living in East Asia for one year and seeing on it reflections of the American ultra capitalistic way of living, I knew that my next big travel would have to be the USA! I wanted to see if one of the US’s largest city, New York City, would be as breathtaking as Hong Kong was to me, or if it was as technologically developed as Seoul or Tokyo. If you want to find out what I concluded, just continue reading this “New York, New York” series that I’m writing! 😉

Depois de visitar e viver na Asia Oriental, sabia que tinha que visitar os EUA! Necessitava saber se a maior cidade dos EUA me tiraria o folgo como Hong Kong. E, ainda, perceber se está à frente de Seul e de Tóquio, na componente tecnológica.

NYC

The City of New York (NYC) is the most populous city in the United States of America and it belongs to the New York State.
It comprises 5 boroughs, with Manhattan being the heart fo the economic activity. We explored Manhattan the majority of the time.
Its time zone is UTC/GMT -4 hours, so we did not have to suffer too much from jet lag.
The official currency of the United States is the U.S. dollar or American dollar ($, USD, US$)

A cidade de Nova Iorque é a cidade mais populosa dos Estados Unidos da América e pertence ao Estado de Nova Iorque.
É composta por 5 distritos, sendo Manhattan o mais importante e onde ficamos a maior parte da nossa viagem.
O fuso horário é UTC / GMT -4 horas.
A moeda utilizada na Cidade de Nova Iorque é o dólar dos Estados Unidos ($, USD, US$).

WHEN TO GO?

I flew to New York with my husband and my parents during last year’s (2018) advent season. It had always been my mother’s dream to visit NY, so on her 69th birthday we decided to make her dream come true 🙂
We visited New York City in December. It’s rumored to be one of the most beautiful months to see the city, with all its Christmas lights, songs and decorations, which make the city even more enchanting.
I do recognize that another splendorous option may be to visit this city during fall, where you will be able to see all the colors of the Central Park in its climax.
Avoid peak summer and winter months because the temperatures can be extreme.

QUANDO VISITAR?

Uma coisa levou a outra, e no último advento aterrei em Nova Iorque com o meu marido e os meus pais.
Visitar a Cidade de Nova Iorque foi sempre o sonho da minha mãe. Então, no seu 69º aniversário, decidimos realizá-lo 🙂
Visitamos a Cidade de Nova Iorque em dezembro e é de longe uma das épocas mais bonitas para ver a cidade. As luzes, as músicas e as decorações de Natal tornam a cidade ainda mais fascinante.
Outra opção maravilhosa para visitar esta cidade é no outono, onde poderá ver o Central Park no seu clímax.
Evite os meses altos do verão e do inverno, porque as temperaturas são extremas e não conseguirá ficar muito tempo no exterior.

VISA? ESTA?

International travelers who wish to travel to the United States must go through the Visa Waiver Program and must apply online for an ESTA authorization (here) no later than 72 hours prior to departure.
If you are not in possession of a visitor’s visa, and your travel is for 90 days or less, you will need to apply for this authorization for one person or a group of applications (2 or more persons). The cost per person is $14.
You can check if your country is part of the Visa Waiver Program in the ESTA website. If your country is not part of the Visa Waiver Program or if your ESTA application is rejected (You will be informed in 3 days or less), you will need to apply for a VISA in the USA embassy near you.

Os viajantes internacionais que desejam viajar para os Estados Unidos ao abrigo do Programa de Isenção de Vistos devem solicitar online uma autorização ESTA (aqui), até 72 horas antes da partida.
Se não possui um visto de visitante, e a sua viagem é de 90 dias ou menos, precisa solicitar esta autorização para uma pessoa ou para um grupo (2 ou mais pessoas). O custo por pessoa é de $14.
Pode verificar se o seu país faz parte do Programa de Isenção de Vistos no site da ESTA. Se o seu país não faz parte do Programa de Isenção de Vistos ou se o seu pedido ESTA for rejeitado (será informado em 3 dias ou menos), precisará solicitar um visto na embaixada dos EUA mais perto de si.

ACCOMODATION

For our 1st visit in NYC we decided to stay in an hotel in Manhattan: the NobleDen Hotel. It isn’t located on Times Square, but rather at the Little Italy neighborhood, nearby the Chinese Town. It was an affordable option and still close by all the important things!

ACOMODAÇÃO

Para a nossa primeira viagem à Cidade de Nova Iorque decidimos ficar hospedados num hotel em Manhattan: o NobleDen Hotel. Não está localizado na Times Square, mas na zona da Little Italy (Pequena Itália) e da Chinese Town (Cidade Chinesa). Ainda assim, perto de tudo!

TRANSPORTATION

You can get to NYC via one of the 3 airports connected to the city. There’s LaGuardia Airport, in Queens borough, the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), and the Newark Liberty International Airport.
We arrived at JFK and we opted to get an Uber ride to reach the hotel. In the same way, we also took a Uber ride to go back to the Airport.
In Manhattan, we used the subway even to reach others boroughs outside Manhattan ( such as Brooklyn). Please note that the entrances to the subway are split into “uptown” or “downtown”, depending on your station of destiny. Typically, the entrances stay at opposite sides of the roads. You can buy a 7-day MetroCard for around 30 USD.

TRANSPORTE

Pode chegar à Cidade de Nova Iorque aterrando em um dos 3 aeroportos que conecta a cidade. No menor, o Aeroporto LaGuardia, localizado no bairro de Queens, ou no Aeroporto Internacional John F. Kennedy (JFK), ou ainda no Aeroporto Internacional Newark Liberty.
Nós aterramos no JFK e optamos por chamar um uber para nos levar para o hotel. Optamos pelo mesmo sistema ao voltar para o aeroporto.
Em Manhattan, usamos maioritariamente o metro, até mesmo para chegar a bairros fora de Manhattan (como Brooklyn). Tenha atenção à sinalética no metro. Se quiser ir para “downtown” (sul de Manhattan) terá que descer as escadas num lado da rua. Caso queirar ir para “uptown” (norte de Manhattan) desça as escadas no sentido contrário. Opte por comprar um cartão de metro, o MetroCard, para 7 dias por cerca de 30 dólares.

TIPS AND VAT

Tipping in NYC is “mandatory”. As is commonly said “workers live of the tips”.
For Taxi drivers, you should tip 1 dollar for a $6-7 trip. If you use Uber you don’t need to tip. However, after you take the ride, the app suggests you to tip.
At the hotel, you should leave $1 to $2 for the doorman, and $5 to $10 for the concierge.
Before visiting NYC, I also read that it was common to tip 15% to 20% in restaurants and cafes. Once there, the places that I visited always suggested to tip between 18% to 25%. Again, in big chains you don’t need to tip, but they will not be rejected either.

In New York City, the listed prices of the products do not include the VAT. The tax of 8.875% (at the time of our visit) was added only when paying.

GORJETA E TAXAS

Dar gorjeta na Cidade de Nova Iorque é comum.
No táxi, deve dar 1 dólar por uma viagem de $ 6-7. Se usar o uber, não precisa dar gorjeta. No entanto, após o seu passeio, a aplicação pode sugerir uma gorjeta
No hotel, para o porteiro, deve dar $1 a $2 e $5 a $10 para o concierge.
Antes de visitar a Cidade Nova Iorque, li que era comum dar uma gorjeta de 15% a 20% em restaurantes e cafés. Uma vez lá, os lugares que visitei sugerem sempre uma gorjeta de 18% a 25%. Nas grandes cadeias não necessita dar gorjeta, mas pode.
