If you are planning a trip to Portugal between May and October you should definitely include the beaches and natural parks in the south of Portugal. If you are a surfaholic, you need to visit the southwest coast (Costa Alentejana), which goes all the way down to Sagres in the Algarve region. If on the other hand you like calm and warm seas, you should visit and stay around Algarve.
This year, between the end of May and beginning of June, I explored some of the coolest places in the south of Portugal. Today I will share my most precious moments with you. Below you can find a compilation map with the places to see, eat, and sleep.

Se está a planear uma viagem a Portugal durante os meses de Maio e Outubro, deverá, definitivamente, conhecer as praias e os parques naturais do sul de Portugal. Se é um amante do surf vai querer conhecer a Costa Alentejana até Sagres no Algarve. Se prefere tranquilidade e um mar quente deverá acomodar as suas férias no Algarve.
No fim de Maio e inícios de Junho, explorei umas praias no sul de Portugal e hoje partilho os locais que mais gostei e aconselho a visitarem. Atente! 🙂

COSTA ALENTEJANA

SESIMBRA & PORTINHO DA ARRÁBIDA

My trip started in Lisbon. Going south, we headed to Sesimbra and the Portinho da Arrábida. Located 40km south of Lisbon, it was one of my favorite spots along our road trip. The water of the beach was as clean as the water I saw in Mykonos, although a little colder.

A viagem começou em Lisboa. Prosseguimos para Sesimbra e para o Portinho da Arrábida. Localiza-se a cerca de 40km de Lisboa, e foi um dos meus locais favoritos nesta roadtrip. A cor da água é espetacular, limpa e transparente como a que vi em Mykonos, só um pouco mais gélida.

COMPORTA

After Sesimbra, head to Setúbal and catch the ferry to Tróia. You can explore its beach or go ahead to Comporta.
The beaches of Comporta have an amazing blue water. Comporta’s village is small and cute, and has characteristic houses. Depois de Sesimbra siga para Setúbal e apanhe o ferry para Tróia. Poderá explorar a sua praia ou seguir para Comporta.
As praias da Comporta têm uma água azul fantástica. A vila é pequena e ao mesmo tempo pitoresca com algumas casinhas tradicionais. Poderá ficar hospedado numa dessas casas (como a da imagem seguinte), basta reservar uma através do site Airbnb. (Se é novo no Airbnb clique aqui para obter 41€ de desconto)

VILA NOVA DE MIL FONTES

Further south, you will get to your next destination: Vila Nova de Mil Fontes. It has a lovely scenery, and it’s perfect for a stroll along the village. Buy some souvenirs and taste Alentejo’s “black pig” at “Tasca do Celso”.

Mais a sul encontramos Vila Nova de Mil Fontes. É um bom local para parar e passear pela vila. Comprar souveniers e comer porco preto na “Tasca do Celso”.

ZAMBUJEIRA DO MAR

Before heading to Odemira we sleept in Casa Da Seiceira, close by Amália Beach. I highly recomend it. A traditional Alentejo house restored by a friendly family.

Antes de seguirmos para Odemira descansamos na Casa Da Seiceira, muito perto da praia da Amália. Recomendo! Uma casa tradicional Alentejana restaurada pela uma família muito calorosa.

As we entered the realm of Algarve, our first stop was Sagres, the westernmost point of continental Portugal (and Europe).

Chegamos ao Algarve, mais concretamente a Sagres. A ponta mais oeste de Portugal continental ( e da Europa).

LAGOS

Astonishing cliffs, breathtaking caves, and perfect beaches. The most scenic place of Algarve. A must visit is: Ponta da Piedade, Dona Ana Beach, and Camilo Beach. You can join a tour at Lagos marina and visit these places by sea on boat.

Grandes falésias, rochas e caves. A cidade mais cénica do Algarve.
A visitar: Ponta da Piedade, Praia de Dona Ana e Praia do Camilo. Poderá juntar-se a uma excursão, na marina de Lagos, e visitar estes lugares por mar num barco.

PORTIMÃO

A famous city among the british tourists. It comprises an enormous coastal length with different kinds of beaches. Rocha, Vau, Três Castelos, Três Irmãos, and Prainha. On Prainha beach you can find a cute, open space restaurant built within the hill, called “O Caniço”. Go there and try their fresh fish. They have a top quality griller and masterfully serve their food. It is a little expensive if you compare it to other restaurants in the area, but it is completely worth it.
We stayed near the Três Irmãos beach. You can find it here! It is an aparthotel, with a nice rate value-offer.

Portimão, compreende uma grande área e aqui encontrará diferentes tipos de praias. Desde pequenas e surpreendentes, a grandes e dinâmicas. Desde a maior até à mais pequena: Praia da Rocha, Praia do Vau, Praia dos 3 Castelos, Praia dos 3 Irmãos e a Prainha. Na Prainha encontrará um pequeno e fofo restaurante encastrado na falésia, “O Caniço”. Experimento o peixe fresco ou o marisco. É um pouco mais dispendioso quando comparado com outros estabelecimentos na área, porém vale cada centímo.
Ficamos hospedados perto da Praia dos 3 irmãos, aqui! Um aparthotel, com uma óptima relação custo-benefício.

LAGOA

If the sea isn’t too wavy, join a tour to see the Benagil caves. We were unlucky with the sea conditions, so we had to skip the tour.
Albandeira beach and Marina beach, located in the area, are also worth the visit.

Se o mar não estiver revolto, faça uma excursão para ver as cavernas de Benagil. Como tivemos azar com o estado do mar, tivemos que saltar este passeio.
Vale a pena visitar as praias de Albandeira e a da Marina, localizadas na região.

ALBUFEIRA & ALGARVE SOTAVENTO (EAST SIDE)

Albufeira is known for its nightlife. Personally, I am not the biggest fan of its beaches, since it’s one of the most crowded destinations of Algarve.
However, Albufeira marks the tipping point of the landscape of the beaches in Algarve. If you keep going east, you will find that the landscape changes from rocky cliffs with strands of sand close to the sea to being the more traditional long strands of sand with dunes separating the beach from the land. In my opinion, the beaches on the East side of Algarve lack a dramatic element, which is what makes Algarve a unique and unforgettable destination for me. Nevertheless, if you are looking for nature, sea, lots of fun and some great tan, the east side of Algarve is a great spot for you.

Albufeira é conhecida por festas noturna. Pessoalmente, não sou apreciadora das suas praias.
O lado leste do Algarve não tem grandes arribas e, para mim, é isto que torna o Algarve tão peculiar. Embora em Sotavento, a maioria dos lisboetas tenha a sua segunda casa.
